Verb Tenses

What are verb tenses?

By tenses, we mean the relationship between our concept of time and the forms of verbs. Time can be seen basically in terms of the present, past and future. This division corresponds to the present, past, and future tenses. Each of these tenses has the simple, the perfect, the progressive, and the perfect progressive tenses.

The Simple Present

Uses
a) To indicate things that may happen at the moment, at any time in the present. This is common when one talks about habits, routines, and hobbies. In this case, it is often accompanied by adverbials of time such as sometimes, never, always, often, usually, etcetera.
Habit: He always drives to school.
Routine: The earth revolves around the sun.
Hobby: He likes to swim.

Exercise
Complete the sentences below with the following words. (until, plays, always, leaves, unless, knows)
Wait __________ he comes.
When you dance, I ____________ feel happy.
If John _____________, we shall probably win.
I can’t come _____________ my mother agrees.
He _____________ for Douala on Friday and returns on Sunday.
She ______________ how to open the door

The Present Continuous/Progressive

It is formed by adding the auxiliary “is, am, or are” to the present participle of the verb. It is used in the following situations:
When something is happening at the actual time of speaking or over a period of time which includes the actual moment of speaking. E.g.:
You are sitting in class.
For planned future action, for example:
-We are writing a test next week.
-The prisoners are trying to escape.

We are writing a test next week.
The prisoners are trying to escape.

The Present Perfect Tense

It is formed by adding the auxiliary “have/has” to the past participle of the verb. It is used in the following cases:
when we talk about a recently completed action With just, already, now, and recently in statements and in questions.
e.g.: He has just/already gone to school.
To answer questions that contain a verb in the present perfect.
e.g: –Where have you been? I’ve been to see Paul.
–What has happened? He has lost his bag.
to express an action that began in the past and is still taking place:
-I have played handball for some years (implying I still play)
-He has worked here for a long time (he still works here).
It should be noted that the auxiliary can be shortened to ‘ve for ‘have’ and ‘s for ‘has’.

The Present Perfect Continuous

Formed by adding has/have + been + present participle.
It is used for an action that has been happening for some time and is still continuing or has just stopped. It is often used with “since” + a definite or point of time. We can also use it with “for” + a length or period of time.
I have been waiting for you for thirty minutes.
They have been playing football since morning.

The Simple Past Tense

Uses
Mainly for completed past actions when the time is known or stated:
I carried out an experiment last night.
John went to the hospital yesterday.
To describe habitual past actions:
She always walked to school.

The Past Continuous Tense

Form: was/were + a present participle.
Uses:
To express a past action that was happening when another action was completed:
I saw him when I was walking home.
She lost the keys when she was playing handball.
to express two past actions which happened at the same time and which were both continuous:
I was singing while they were dancing.
to show what was happening at a past time:
At ten o’clock last night, I was watching television.
To replace the present continuous in reported speech:
Direct: He said, “I’m looking for my keys.”
Indirect/reported: He said he was looking for his keys.
used for canceled future action:
I was going to buy a test tube when Mary said she has already bought one for me.

The Past Perfect Tense

Form: had + a past participle
Uses:
To show which of two past actions happened first. In this case, the verb of the second action is in the simple past tense.
She went to bed after she had locked the door.
I had gone to the market when you called.
used in reported speech:
John told us that he had just passed his driving test.
used in conditional sentences which refer to the past:
If you had passed your exams, you would have gone on holiday.
used after “I wish, if only, I would rather, and I would sooner” when referring to a past event:
I wish I had not spent all the money.
I would rather you had not given him much water.
If only the teacher had been here.

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Form: had been + a present participle.
We can use this tense when the first of two past actions were continuous:
We stopped for a rest after we had been walking for two hours.
By the time he came home, she had been crying.

Simple Future Tense

Form: shall/will + infinitive without to.
In statements, we can use will with any subject but some people prefer to use shall after I and we. In questions, we must use shall before I and we. The main use of the simple future tense is for planned or unplanned future events.
Planned: Mary’s phone will arrive at two o’clock.
Unplanned: Who will win the race?

Future Continuous

Form: shall/will + be + present participle.
Uses:
To express an action that will be in progress at some time in the future.
We shall be waiting for you at four o’clock.
To express the future without intention (not especially planned).
He will be coming here tomorrow as usual.
NB To express doubt, we can use “may” in place of “shall” or “will”.
He may be coming here tomorrow.

The Future Perfect Tenses

Form:shall/will + have + a past participle (non continuous)
– shall + have + been + a present participle (continuous form).
The future perfect tense is used to express an action that will be completed or finished by some future time or date.
I shall have finished my assignment by ten o’clock. (future perfect)
By the end of the semester, I shall have been learning English for ten years (future perfect continuous).

Subject/Verb Agreement

In constructing sentences in the English language, the various parts of speech must agree with each other. The verb must agree with its subject in number. A singular subject takes a singular verb, while a plural subject takes a plural verb e.g. The cups are in the cupboard. Cups (plural subject) agree with are (plural verb) Note that a verb that takes an (s) is not a plural verb. It rather agrees with singular pronoun subjects except for I and you which agree with the plural that does not take an “s” e.g.
He makes it
She makes it
It makes it
That/this makes it
Nobody makes it
Everybody makes it
Everyone makes it
They make it
We make it
I make it
You make it

Prayers For Self-Improvement 1

Saint Therese of the Child Jesus defined prayer as, A glance directed towards heaven, a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trials and joys.” With this in mind, I believe that these Self Improvement prayers coming from my daily meditation surely would direct my glance toward heaven, and carry my cry of gratitude and love, in the midst of my trials and joys, to God my heavenly Father through Jesus Christ His Son my Lord. I would love you to join me pray these fifteen heart-searching and self-sanctifying prayers coming from my daily reflection. You will never go empty-handed but are highly blessed when you pray in faith. Let us pray

  1. Bless my inner being dear Lord

Dear Lord, I praise and honor you on this new day. I thank you for all the goodness it brings. May I step into it only with one mission; to do your will. I offer you all I have to do this day with full understanding that you would assist me by your angels, I am not alone. You are always with me, my God, you would never abandon me. Bless my inner being, dear Lord, that all that would come from within me today would sanctify me and bless others for the glory of your holy name. Dearest Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.

2. Lord, you are the rock that holds my life.

I am standing on a rock, the rock that holds my life, the rock that is God. Your precepts and your words, oh Lord, give me a reason to live, and you are the only way the truth and the life. Only in you can I be fulfilled and be peaceful. Lord let me not praise you only by lips, let not my heart be far from you but Worship you in truth and spirit. May my whole being give praise to you my God for you alone are my maker, my deliverer, and my God forever. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen

3. Jesus, you are the God of surprises.

My Loving Jesus, you are a God of surprises. You answer my prayers when I least expect it. You know all about me, when I’m succeeding and when I’m failing. Lord, I need your grace to continue trusting in you because you never fail. I’ll not shy from you because of my weaknesses for I know when I came to you, I’ll never remain unclean or unrewarded. Dearest Jesus, I open my heart to your surprises upon my family, and may I be your friend forever.  Amen

4. Save me from evil ways oh Lord

Dearest Jesus, my Lord, and my God, I worship you. I love to praise you today and forever, oh Lord, with a clear conscience.  Give me the grace oh Lord to avoid mortal sin in my life. Let me not plan to do evil. Let me not seize an opportunity to sin at my disposal and sin. Let me not cooperate with others to sin. Let me not conform to the standards of this world but transform me oh Lord, that I may serve you just as I am, with my limitations or weaknesses, but never with planned evil. Help me, Jesus. Amen.

5. Jesus, Light Of The World, I Trust In You

Oh loving Jesus, Light of the world, thank you for coming into the world to save me. By your light, you make me see, do things easily, be happy, and have confidence, fearing nothing. How can I live without you, the light of my life? You would always make a way where there is no way.  Like Joseph in Egypt, Daniel in the lion’s den, Shadrach and his brothers, miraculously, you let the Apostles this day out of prison because you will always make a way where there is no way and shine your light of salvation upon your loved one.  I believe, hope, and trust, dear Lord, that I am walking in your light and your mighty hand is at work in my life. When you say yes no one can say no. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen

6. Lord, you would answer our prayer when the time comes

Like Job, he went a long time but didn’t curse you, oh God. This woman made twelve years and still believed and trusted you. The man at the pool went thirty-eight waiting for his turn, known only by you, oh God. The paralyzed man waited many years until his turn came, and many and many, all for your glory. We are here waiting for our turn, all known by your, oh Lord. That moment of grace when your face would shine brighter on us and we would join so many you have healed to shout thanksgiving and praise to your holy name. We would continue to adore you as we are, believing and hoping that you would answer our prayer when the time comes. Dearest Father, I trust in you Amen.

7. Lord, your presence is awesome

Jesus. My Lord and my God, your presence is awesome, your presence is powerful, your presence is healing. I worship you, oh Lord with all my life because you are always present, and your presence brings healing and deliverance to my spouse and me. I will forevermore praise and worship you for there is none like you. I love you, Jesus. Amen

8. I will not weaver, you are with me, Lord

Loving Jesus, I commend my body and soul to you today, because you are the only one to bring calmness to my life. When the tempest of life attempts to push in fears, I will not weaver because I know you are right here with me. I will turn to you with confidence and you will not fail me but order the waves and bring me calmness, so that I may remain in your peaceful service all the days of my life. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen

9. Oh Lord, keep me from the distraction of sin

My Lord and my God, all praise and glory belong to you. Seeing a new day with a good program for me is a wonderful gift from you. As I keep myself busy oh Lord, keep me from the distraction of sin. Let me be focused and do what is right and helpful for my family, myself, friends, and those I’ll meet today at my hospital appointment. You are Lord over all happenings in my life today. Father, I hope and trust in you. Amen

10. Let me not only hear but act your words lord

My Lord and my God, you are so good. You give me your word every day, thank you. Dear Lord, of what use is your word to me if I do not put it into practice? Can a seed grow without being put into the soul? Lord help me that I may not only hear your words but put them into practice in my thoughts words and deeds so that they may transform me and others. Lord, open not only my ears but also my eyes, mouth, heart, and actions to the impact of your words. I love you, Lord Amen

11. Father I believe, hope, and trust in your power of transformation

O Lord my God, I praise and worship you because you are awesome, you change the hearts of men. You are telling me today that if I treat others badly, it is you I’m treating. Father, forgive my weaknesses and give me a loving heart that I may love you truly in others. Loving Father I believe, hope, and trust in your mighty power of transformation. Help me in my endeavors to be a transformed person. Amen

12. Give me the grace to love others Lord

Father Lord, you ask me to love others as you have loved me. Give me the grace to love others even those who do not love me. May I not criticize but correct. May I not be jealous but imitate. May I not curse but bless. Loving Father, only by your grace can I attend this. Here I am Lord, use me. Thank you, Lord, Amen

13. With a heart serene, let me embrace this new day, Lord

One day at a time Sweet Jesus is what I ask of you, and yes, here comes one so bright and shine, with many promises. May I step into it dear Lord, with a heart serene to love as you love, see as you see, hear as you hear, and do everything as you would do them. I entrust my family and precious friends into your hands, bless and heal them. Sweet Jesus, I trust in you. Amen

14. That I may be merciful, Lord

My Lord and my God, you are worthy of my praise and adorable. May your name be praised and adored. You teach me to do good always even if I have the opportunity to pay back my offenders. You are my protector, my defender, my God in whom I trust, whom shall I fear? You are always for me, your angels around me, and my battle is yours. Should I fight or revenge when my God is with me, his power all around me? Lord have mercy on any who have ever offended me. That I may be merciful as you are merciful to me. I bless them, Lord, and ask you to bless them double. Father Lord, you are good to me, I love you. Amen.

15. Let the good that is in my heart rule my being, o lord

My Lord and my God, let the desires of my heart be the thoughts of my mind, the words of my mouth, and the actions of my hands. That I may attend the desires of my heart. I wish everything good was just a desire and that my weak self was not involved in the good I wanted to do, which is often delayed or marred by my physical weaknesses. Lord help me to do the good my heart desires, to reign from within and not from without. Let the good that is in my heart rule my being, o lord. I love you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit; Mighty God, now and forever. Amen

Gospel for Second Sunday of Easter Year C

“Have you come to believe because you have seen me?”
Gospel Reading for Second Sunday of Easter Year C
Gospel – John 20:19-31

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.
31 But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Gospel For Third Sunday of Easter Year C

Gospel – John 21:1-19

1 At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way.

2 Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples.

3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.”

6 So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.

7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea.

8 The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.

9 When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.”

11 So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.

12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord.

13 Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish.

14 This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

16 He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

17 Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”

19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

R. (2a) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

2  I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear

and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.

4  O LORD, you brought me up from the netherworld;

you preserved me from among those going down into the pit.

R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

5  Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones,

and give thanks to his holy name.

6  For his anger lasts but a moment;

a lifetime, his good will.

At nightfall, weeping enters in,

but with the dawn, rejoicing.

R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

11  Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me;

O LORD, be my helper.

12  You changed my mourning into dancing;

13  O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks.0fds
